Multicultural

Multicultural literacy is knowledge of cultures and languages, as well as the ways in which multi-sensory data (text, sound, and graphics) may introduce slant, perspective, and bias into language, subject matter, and visual content. (Knowedge Network)

Today's diverse society offers a wide range of experiences and opportunities for todays student. Our multicultural society requires students be able to interact positively with others who come from a different place in terms of "gender, rural or urban environments, nationalistically, linguistically, racially, and religiously".

Let's prepare them to make the future better than the past -

Literacy Web - designed to promote the use of the Internet as a tool to assist classroom teachers in their search for best practices in literacy instruction, including the new literacies of Internet technologies. Includes a variety of resources in an annotated webliography for multicultural resources especially for librarians.

Multicultural Literacy from NCREL - A site that provides a very useful definition of multicultural literacy as "the ability to understand and appreciate the similarities and differences in the customs, values, and beliefs of one's own culture and the cultures of others." Offers concrete objectives and resources to support teachers in teaching this skill.

Teaching for Multicultural Literacy, Global Citizenship, and Social Justice - This page offers ways to integrate music, stories, and international perspectives into the classroom. A great resource.

Human Rights Watch - The watchdog groups offers an snapshot of human rights in countries throughout the world. These clear snapshots of the state of human rights detail the continual battle for freedom, equality, and peace throughout the world.
