Gifted and Talented

Oakland Elementary strives for an equitable Gifted and Talented program that includes high potential, high achieving and gifted students. This talent development group will reflect the population of the school in gender, grade level, disability, English language proficiency, and ethnic or cultural background. The school meets the needs of these students in a variety of ways. This may include, differentiated lessons and flexible grouping, small group instruction, social emotional groups, individual check-ins, advanced or accelerated work, lessons with added depth and complexity, the use of thinking maps and additional classroom and teacher resources.

Each fall, students in Kindergarten and 2nd grade will participate in gifted and talented universal screening testing that will help to guide student educational programming. In addition student’s in 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th can be assessed upon request in early fall or spring. Students, who have been formally identified as gifted through a body of evidence, will have personalized Advanced Learning Plans (ALP) developed for them each school year, focusing on their identified strength area. The plan will be developed in collaboration with the school gifted and talented teacher, the classroom teacher, parents and students.
