At Oakland, we are committed to creating an inclusive and empowering environment for all students. Gabriela, our Principal, has been a key leader in advancing the Black Student Success Program, a vital initiative focused on ensuring that Black students not only succeed academically but also thrive personally within our school community.
Oakland was one of five schools selected for this initiative. Gabriela was invited to be a key speaker at the inaugural event. She expresses her deep pride in the program, stating, “I am proud to be part of the Black Student Success Program. Our goal is to create lasting and meaningful change in the lives of our students. This work is more than just a commitment—it’s a profound opportunity to uplift, empower, and ensure that every Black student in our school thrives both academically and personally. Together, we are shaping a brighter future, and I am honored to be on this journey with you all.”
Recently, Oakland staff attended the Black Excellence Summit, where they participated in discussions and workshops designed to enhance strategies for supporting Black students. The summit provided a collaborative space for educators to share insights and best practices that will help strengthen the impact of the Black Student Success Program at Oakland. Gabriela and her team returned from the summit with a renewed sense of purpose and actionable steps to further uplift and support students.
The Black Student Success Program is about intentional action. “When I emphasize that ‘Black students thrive academically and personally not by chance but by design,’ I mean that their success is the result of intentional, well-thought-out strategies and actions rather than random or lucky occurrences,” Gabriela explains. She underscores the importance of deliberate planning, equitable resources, and systemic changes that address the specific needs of Black students.
Her vision goes beyond academic performance—it’s about fostering a school culture where Black students feel truly valued. “By fostering a school culture where Black students not only succeed academically but also feel genuinely valued and understood, we can create a sustainable impact that resonates throughout our school community,” Gabriela shares.
Under Gabriela’s leadership, Oakland has made strides to ensure that the personal growth, identity, and cultural background of Black students are woven into their educational experience. “This approach involves creating an environment where Black students are supported, challenged, and empowered to achieve their full potential. It also means that their personal growth, identity, and cultural background are valued and integrated into their learning experiences,” Gabriela adds.
Through the Black Student Success Program, Oakland is actively working to eliminate barriers, provide targeted support, and foster a culture of high expectations and inclusion. Gabriela’s commitment and vision have been instrumental in ensuring that Black students’ success is a planned, predictable outcome, helping to shape a brighter and more equitable future for all.
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue this important journey together.
